Reducing Your Telecom Costs - A Complex Reality

The telecommunication industry is a very dynamic market; new technologies, products, services and rate plans appear often. For companies and their employees, keeping up to date and understanding these changes and their overall impact can be challenging. Confirming if you are truly paying the right amount for the services you need can be even more difficult.

Why is this the case? Let’s look at key problem areas that can hinder the ability to assess your telecom spend with clarity. Complex billing and pricing makes it difficult to identify billing errors Understanding invoices and different pricing rates is not straightforward. To do so, you have to review large amounts of data and decipher if it corresponds with your contract agreement and usage. Varying and complicated billing structures can make this process arduous. Again this year, in its annual report released December 2, 2015, the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS) indicated that 30.1% of the complaints received by businesses relate to billing.

Rate plans and services are rarely tailored to your specific needs Without an in depth review of your usage and needs, engaging in an educated discussion with service providers to align their rate plans and options with what you actually need becomes problematic. Companies often end up overpaying by selecting more features than they require for fear of encountering additional charges later on. Difficulty comparing pricing between providers The fast pace of the telecommunications industry and the need for providers to constantly reinvent themselves often results in service packages and plans that are rapidly changing and difficult to compare. Companies and IT managers often have a false perception that their telecom costs are already optimized. When their current contract is up for renewal, they may feel confident that they have achieved some savings from their provider.

However, when turning to Ayming prior to signing a new contract, many of our clients have obtained an additional 20-40% savings following benchmark-based pricing negotiations and plan revisions. Some clients already locked into long-term contracts were still able to obtain an additional 15-25% savings due to our contract optimization expertise. The reality is that without performing an audit of your telecom bills, knowing what your detailed needs are and comparing them against equivalent service level offerings, you cannot truly know if your telecom spend is as optimized as it has the potential to be.
