Government funding to support Alberta SMEs expanding into new international markets – Alberta Export Expansion Program

The Alberta Export Expansion Program (AEEP) is a provincial funding program designed to support Alberta-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) promoting their products and services internationally.

AEEP helps eligible businesses offset the costs associated with international travel to formal trade and export-related events, enabling Alberta exporters to enter new markets, diversify revenue streams, and strengthen their global presence.

The time to act is now! Given the highly competitive nature of this program, it’s important to start the application quickly to build a comprehensive proposal and apply before funds run out.

Eligible activities

Funding supports outbound international travel to formal trade or export-related events, including:

• Participation in international trade shows and exhibitions

• Export-focused conferences and industry events

• Market development activities directly linked to new market entry

Travel must be directly tied to a formal international trade event and involve Alberta-based travellers.

Eligible applicants

Eligible applicants must:

• Be an incorporated for-profit business operating in Alberta

• Have a permanent physical presence in Alberta for at least one year

• Have annual gross sales between $250,000 and $25M
  (Emerging technology companies may be eligible starting at $50,000)

• Employ at least one full-time employee in Alberta

• Have fewer than 500 full-time employees

• Be export-ready, with:

  • A market-ready product or service

  • A defined market entry plan

  • Capacity to meet increased demand
