Alberta tech companies: access up to $105,000 through the Alberta Innovates – Industry R&D Associates Program to de-risk R&D, create skilled jobs, and shorten your path to market.
This program provides non-repayable funding and advisory support to help Alberta-based SMEs hire a dedicated R&D Associate, advance prototypes, and achieve measurable technical and business milestones, all with the goal of accelerating commercialization and local economic growth.

- Maximum funding: up to $105,000 per project (non-repayable grant).
Who can apply?
Eligible applicants include Alberta-based, incorporated for-profit companies with a material operational presence in Alberta, typically:
- SMEs with under than 500 employees
- Annual revenue of lower than $50M
Eligible Projects
Projects should focus on hiring a dedicated R&D Associate to accelerate product development and must:
- Include critical “go/no-go” milestones with measurable outcomes
- Be completed within one year
- Have a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 3 and 9
- Clearly outline the applicant’s 25% financial contribution
- Comply with all Alberta Innovates program criteria
Eligible Costs
Funding supports costs that help SMEs advance product development and de-risk innovation, including:
- Base salary of the R&D Associate (company funds at least 25%)
- Unrecoverable GST on eligible costs (if not reimbursed elsewhere)
