MiHR Wage Subsidy Programs
The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) administers two complementary wage subsidy programs designed to help Canadian mining employers recruit, retain, and develop their workforce, while providing students and youth with meaningful, sector-relevant work experience. Both programs run on a rolling intake basis within MiHR’s fiscal year (April 1 to March 31), with subsidies paid once placement conditions and required training modules are completed.
Eligible Applicants
Gearing Up program
- Canadian-owned companies or Canadian subsidiaries involved in the mining and mineral exploration sectors
- Small, medium, or large companies
- Not-for-profit organizations in the mining sector
- Registered in a full-time or part-time post-secondary program at a Canadian institution
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection
- Legally able to work in Canada under provincial/territorial laws
- Studying in fields applicable to the mining sector: STEM, business, or other mining-related programs
Green Jobs program
- Canadian-owned organizations or Canadian subsidiaries
- For-profit organizations in the minerals and metals sector
- Must provide full-time, paid placements with mentorship and supervision
- Between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the placement
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Unemployed, underemployed, or a student prior to the placement start
- Not enrolled in school full-time
Project Requirements
Each program has specific requirements for the placement position itself
Gearing Up program
- Paid employment providing relevant, meaningful work experience as part of a post-secondary program
- Must represent a net new placement greater than the number of WIL opportunities offered by the employer in the year prior to first participating in the program
- Must be a component of the student’s graduation requirements
- Hired between April 1 and March 31 of the current fiscal year
- Position must be within STEM or business fields
- Must take place in Canada
Green Jobs program
- Full-time, paid placement providing relevant, meaningful experience in the minerals and metals sector
- Must be supervised by experienced staff acting as mentors or coaches throughout the placement
- Up to 12 months in duration
- Hired between April 1 and March 31 of the current fiscal year
- Must relate to processes with positive environmental outcomes aimed at protecting the environment
- Must align with green economic sectors or support innovation and the use of green technologies in the minerals and metals sector
