The DTP supports Alberta-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at the validation stage in accelerating their path toward commercialization. The program provides non-repayable funding and advisory support to help early-stage companies move from prototype to scalable, market-ready solutions by achieving clear business and technical milestones.

Who Can Apply?

The DTP is open to Alberta-based for-profit organizations, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), that are developing innovative digital technologies.

  • Companies with fewer than 500 employees
  • Annual revenues below $50 million
  • Applicants must have a significant operational presence in Alberta

Project Requirements

To qualify, projects must demonstrate clear commercialization potential and contribute to Alberta’s digital innovation ecosystem. Each project must:

  • Be completed within one year
  • Have a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 3 and 9
  • Clearly outline the Applicant’s 25% financial contribution
  • Comply with all Alberta Innovates criteria

Eligible Costs

The program supports a wide range of costs that help SMEs validate, demonstrate, and commercialize their digital technologies, including:

  • Equipment, materials, and supplies for demonstration activities
  • Labour and contractor fees directly related to the project
  • Travel expenses essential to project delivery
  • Marketing and communication costs linked to commercialization
  • Overhead and administrative costs (within approved limits)
