Alberta SMEs can now access up to $120,000 through the Alberta Innovates – Industry Commercialization Associates Program (ICAP) to accelerate the commercialization of innovative technologies, hire skilled R&D associates, and bring new products to market faster.

The ICAP supports Alberta-based companies in hiring R&D or commercialization associates to strengthen internal capabilities, advance prototypes, and achieve measurable commercialization milestones. The program helps de-risk product launches, expand technical capacity, and drive Alberta’s innovation ecosystem.

Funding Amount of Alberta Innovates – Industry Commercialization Associates Program

  • Maximum funding: Up to $120,000 per project (non-repayable grant)
  • Funding coverage: Up to 75% of eligible project costs

Who Can Apply?

The program is designed for Alberta-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are developing and commercializing new technologies.

  • For-profit organizations incorporated and operating in Alberta
  • SMEs with fewer than 500 employees
  • Annual revenue under $50 million

Project Requirements

Eligible projects must support commercialization efforts and demonstrate clear economic value. Each project should:

  • Include critical “go/no-go” milestones with measurable outcomes
  • Be completed within one year
  • Have a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 5 and 9
  • Clearly define the Applicant’s 25% financial contribution

Eligible Costs

The program covers costs that directly support commercialization and product launch readiness, including:

  • Base salary of the Associate (up to 75% of costs covered; Applicant funds at least 25%)
  • Unrecoverable GST on eligible project expenses
